Part of Puccini's
Il Tritico,
Suor Angelica is the story of a young girl from a noble family who has been banished to a convent by her family for the crime of bearing a son out of wedlock. Seven years Suor Angelica has remained in the convent longing to see her son, when her Aunt, the noble
Princess, comes to have her sign a parchment relinquishing her heir to the family's estate for her little sister's
dowry. At the same time, her Aunt coldly informs her that her son died two years prior. Stricken with grief, Suor Angelica vows to be
reunited with her son. Upon poisoning herself, Suor Angelica realizes what she has done and
begs the Madonna for forgiveness. As she dies, the chorus of nuns, saying their evening prayers, echoes in the background as Suor Angelica is granted final piece in heaven.
