Act III Orfeo and Euridice
Orfeo is grief-stricken at the untimely death of his bride. The power of his mournful song has moved the gods to grant him passage into the underworld to retrieve his beloved Euridice on condition that he refrain from looking at her until they have reached the world of the living. Her piteous entreaties and accusations of cold heartedness weaken his resolve until finally, he defies the gods and gazes upon her with disastrous results. As she dies for the second time, he again raises his voice in a sung appeal to the gods.
